Volunteers
A lot of the activities that we like to put on for the children work best only when there are good numbers of adults involved. Some activities call for one adult to every child or pair of children. As result, we sometimes find that there simply are not enough school staff to put on activities that we would like to do.
The school staff welcomes any parents or other family members or friends of pupils who would like to help out as volunteers on a regular basis. The activities would be very enjoyable and it is great to see the children having fun while learning and you will learn much yourself. And you do not necessarily have to be with your own child all the time.
We are not looking for free labour to cut school costs. We are simply trying to make as many stimulating activities available as we possibly can and, hopefully, give more people insights into what the children learn and enjoy at school. The kind of activities where we really need help include:
on Friday afternoons when we run a series of ‘options’ for children – music, dance, cookery, construction, community visits, orienteering and the like;
PE and creative activities (daily);
movement activities for children with physical disabilities (Wednesday mornings and afternoons);
a range of lunchtime activities (daily); and
a whole range of teaching activities in class daily and regular off-site educational visits.
If you are interested or know somebody who would be interested in doing voluntary work in school, please contact the school. Somebody will get in touch with you to talk through what is involved.
Current legislation means that we must do checks on people’s backgrounds in case they have a criminal conviction that means that they should not work with children. Therefore, we will need all volunteers to fill in a Criminal Records Bureau form. This enables the CRB to do checks and reassure schools and parents. There will be no cost to you but there may be a delay of 4 to 6 weeks while the checks are being completed.
Please don’t let this requirement put you off from becoming a volunteer. I am sure you will enjoy the role greatly.
