Home Learning (Homework)
The purpose of homework is to develop an effective partnership between the school and the parents (and/or carers and/or other family members) of pupils in developing effective learning by them. It is intended to reinforce and consolidate key skills, particularly language, communication, literacy, numeracy, personal self care, mobility and independence. It can also encourage pupils to develop learning skills, confidence and self discipline.
Homework means any work or activities which pupils are asked to do outside school hours, either on their own or with parents. This is a deliberately broad definition of homework reflecting the needs of the pupils and their circumstances.
Due to their learning difficulties many pupils lack confidence and we do not want parents to feel that they must institute rigorous, time-bound homework patterns that might create difficulties for relationships at home. Homework must be positive for both parents and pupils. Homework resources and guidelines for activities are available.
At St Luke’s Primary School we recognise that the intrinsic value of homework activities is far more important than the precise amount of time devoted to them. The suggested time allocation is no more than twenty minutes each evening and the time spent will depend on the type of homework set and the needs of the individual pupil and his/her family.
If parents choose not to have homework for their child, we recognise that as a personal decision that they are entitled to make.
Parents may make requests for homework at any time and will receive support and guidance from their child’s teacher.
