Child Protection and Safeguarding
A copy of the policy can be downloaded by clicking the link at the bottom of the page. At St Luke's, we will all do our utmost to help keep every pupil safe, protecting them from harm and neglect. All staff are made aware that they must keep the welfare of the child at the centre of all they do. The school will ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to provide and maintain an environment where children feel safe and secure. At the bottom of this page you can download our full child protection and safeguarding policy.
All staff are made aware that they have a duty to co operate and a professional responsibility to share information with other agencies when it is necessary to safeguard and promote the welfare of a child.
The school will report any disclosure or suspicion that child abuse may have occurred to North Lincolnshire’s Children and Young People’s Services Duty Team. The investigation of possible child abuse is the responsibility of social workers and the police. The school staff do not do any investigation but will do everything possible to assist them in this task.
The school’s ‘child protection policy’ is derived from a model provided by North Lincolnshire Children and Young People’s Service. It details a range of procedures designed to ensure that children are protected if they are at risk of significant harm in any setting.
All concerns regarding children at risk of significant harm will be dealt with following the Children’s Multi-Agency Resilience and Safeguarding Board (MARS) Procedures by the Child Protection Coordinator.
All staff will be provided with updated child protection training every three years with regular updates from the Child Protection Coordinator. This training is included in the induction programme for new staff members.
Staff are expected to encourage children to approach the adults who work with them in the school if they are worried or in difficulty. Given their communication difficulties, staff need to be sensitive to possible signs of distress or physical and behavioural signs of abuse.
All matters relating to child protection are confidential.
Information about a pupil will be disclosed to other members of staff on a need to know basis only.
All staff and volunteers are told that they should raise concerns about any poor or unsafe practice in school with the Child Protection Coordinator.
The selection panels for appointing staff always include at least one person who has received appropriate training in safe recruitment. Before staff are appointed, checks are made on identity, validity of qualifications, references, previous and employment history. Employees will not start in posts until all checks are shown to be satisfactory.
The designated Child Protection Coordinator is the Deputy Headteacher, Pippa Jones, The designated Child Protection governor is Petula Whittaker, chairperson of the governing body.
