English

English encompasses teaching pupils to communicate through informal and informal means, using speech, written words, signs, symbols and other media, in a variety of contexts encountered in everyday life.

In particular, English offers pupils opportunities to:

· develop the ability to respond, to listen and to understand
· interact and communicate effectively with others in a range of social situations
· make choices, obtain information, question and be actively involved in decision making
· develop creativity and imagination
· have access to a wide range of literature to enrich and broaden their experience.

High expectations for the pupils will be reflected in the relevant, challenging and enjoyable activities planned to enable pupils to achieve their personal potential in aspects of the subject. These activities are planned with full consideration given to pupils’ ages and social needs.

Teaching in other subjects is used to develop further the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a wider context, e.g. through teaching subject-specific vocabulary, play skills and discussion work.

There is support from the speech and language therapists, as a specialist advisers, and this is crucial to the planning and implementation of English.

Signs, symbols and visual systems will be used as appropriate. These have been agreed and standardised between the two special schools.
