Numicon at St Luke's Primary School
Introduction of Numicon
Numicon was introduced at St Luke’s after discussion with a numeracy curriculum consultant from the Local Authority. After observing the children and listening to the challenges that children faced in learning number the local authority consultant felt that Numicon would address many of the issues the children were facing, including recognising number and attaching value to numbers. Research into Numicon and children with special educational needs was also studied.

Using Numicon at St Luke's
A child is using Numicon shapes to complete addition sums. He can identify that the two shapes each have a different value and then count them as one set to find the answer.
Staff have received in-house training in the use of Numicon and training from a local authority consultant. Numicon sets have been brought for the large majority of classes and are being used in maths lessons throughout the week.
Numicon is becoming a valuable resource for the majority of pupils at St Luke’s. Teachers have reported that many children are able to give the number attached to the shape immediately. Children are using the shapes to learn about addition and subtraction and the value of numbers.
The colours and the shapes allow for children to attach a numerical value to a single object, This can be used to help teach concepts such as money, including learning that one item can have a value of more than one.

Odd and even
A child is using the Numicon shapes to work out the relationships between odd and even numbers, when two numbers are added together. The Numicon shapes give a visual representation of the sums.
