Contact a Family - www.cafamily.org.uk gives information and advice on a wide range of issues including welfare rights, education, short breaks, local services and local support. It produces a wide range of publications including newsletters, parent guides and research reports, helping parents and professionals to stay informed. It has an invaluable directory – a guide to medical conditions and disabilities with information on over 1000 conditions and each entry provides an overview of the condition with details of support groups where available.

Remap is a charity funded by voluntary contributions devoted to making life easier and more fulfilling for people with disabilities.  We make purpose designed equipment sometimes as simple as a step box or transfer board, or more complex devices, but always designed for the individual.  The equipment is provided free of charge.

The DirectGov website - www.direct.gov.uk has a section on caring for a disabled child. It includes such items as:
  • A short guide to people you may meet while your child is being looked after.
  • The support available for disabled children in education, health and everyday life.
  • Direct payments for a disabled child can be made to people with parental responsiblity for the child.
  • Extra things to think about when looking for chidcare for a disabled child.

The Family Fund –  www.familyfund.org.uk  gives grants for things that make life easier and more enjoyable for the disabled child, young person and their family, such as washing machines, driving lessons, computers and holidays. The Fund is a registered charity, helping around 53,000 families on the lowest of incomes across the UK.

Ace Centre - www.ace-centre.org.uk is a website that gives help and advice about communication aids and assistive technology, it can offer assistance in assessing the needs of someone with difficulties communicating. It also has sections on training and a small selection of free software to download, amongst others.
This website is a good source of information for parents. It includes practical advice and a symptoms checker which can help reassure parents about symptoms of illness in their children.

St Hugh’s Specialist College for Communication and Interaction is our secondary special school in North Lincolnshire. The majority of St. Luke’s Primary School pupils transfer there at the end of the primary phase of education. The two schools have very close links. The school caters for students between the ages of 11 years and 19 years of age who have a range of learning difficulties including moderate, severe learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, profound and complex needs and language and communication difficulties.
