Geography
Learning geography helps pupils develop their curiosity in, and an understanding of, themselves, other people and places, and the relationships between them.
In particular, studying geography offers pupils opportunities to:
· become aware of and understand their personal position in space.
· become aware of and interested in themselves and their immediate surroundings.
· explore the immediate neighbourhood of the school and the school’s own buildings and grounds.
· develop an interest in and knowledge of places and people beyond their immediate experience.
· experience aspects of other countries and cultures especially where there are comparisons similarities and differences with their own.
Geographical knowledge and understanding is developed through mobility and independence activities which take advantage of space in the teaching spaces, special places and corridors in the school building. Any form of expression of awareness of different environments or features of them and likes or dislikes for these is encouraged.
Much emphasis is given to giving direct experience of different places and geographical features (e.g. investigating the seaside or woodlands) and all pupils regularly go on educational visits to different places in North Lincolnshire, and sometimes beyond its boundaries.
Children aged 3 to 7 years will thoroughly explore the school and local environments, but they will also get to visit farms and local parks and gardens, to find out where people work and what they do and to look at different homes, including where their friends live.
Children aged 7 to 11 years will have opportunities to find out more about Scunthorpe and about contrasting places like Hull or Cleethorpes. They will have opportunities to investigate the seaside, woodlands, the countryside and local rivers.
