Art
Art and design (art) stimulates the creativity and imagination of all pupils. It provides visual tactile and sensory experiences, helping pupils to try to understand and respond to the world in which they live. Pupils have the opportunity to learn about the place and role of art craft and design in life today as well as in different times and cultures.
Art is a subject that enables all pupils to have success. It helps build self esteem as a result of taking part in the creative process and enjoying the results.
Particular aims are:
1. To give pupils opportunities to experience and develop skills in:-
a. Painting
b. Drawing/graphics
c. Print making
d. Collage/graphics
e. Sculpture
f. Textiles
g. Art/design based IT programmes.
2. To make opportunities for pupils to give opinions or state preferences or express likes and dislikes about their own work, that of other pupils and also practitioners (artists past and present).
3. To let the pupils experience the contribution made by artists, craft workers and designers, past and present, to the world’s culture and progress.
4. To help the pupils become visually/texturally aware and to be able to use, experience and/or understand art as a form of communication.
5. To experience artefacts, prints, paintings and other objects of interest and have these as stimulus for their own work.
6. To enhance the spiritual, moral and cultural development of pupils.
7. To help pupils enjoy and gain pleasure from creative activity.
8. To help pupils to work as part of a team on shared projects.
Artists and designers work will be used as examples and inspiration for children’s work. Some activities may be child-led as a result of a spontaneous expression of ideas.
All pupils will follow a graded skills programme for particular processes e.g. ceramics or print making. They will learn to select and manipulate appropriate tools and materials for specific activities.
Visits to galleries, arts centres and places of aesthetic interest will take place.
