Annual Reviews

At least once per year, the Headteacher invites the parents of each pupil to a meeting at the school that is called the ‘annual review’.

The purpose of the annual review of a pupil’s statement is to make sure that the parents, the pupil, the local authority, the school and all the professionals involved monitor and evaluate the continued effectiveness and relevance of the provision set out in the statement.

In advance of the meeting, the head teacher will request written views from the child’s parents and anyone else the head teacher considers appropriate. These people will certainly include the class teacher and the speech and language therapist. Other important contributors can include the physiotherapist, the occupational therapist, social worker, foster carers, residential care officers, the assigned educational psychologist, specialist teachers from the educational services for children with autism, children with visual impairments, children with hearing impairments, community nurses, school health nurses, etc.

If it is possible to elicit the pupil’s views, the head teacher should also make sure that they are recorded.

All of these written reports are circulated in advance of the annual review meeting and will be discussed at the meeting. The meeting will be chaired by the Headteacher or another teacher. The chairperson will summarise the results of the discussions which will be sent to local authority. This report will include the views of the pupil and the parents where available. It will also include any recommendations for changes to the statement and agreed priority learning targets for the coming year.

The annual review meeting is a good opportunity for parents to receive a summary of their child’s progress and achievements in the past year. It is also a time to discuss any particular support that parents or carers may need to meet the pupil’s social, health and welfare needs as well as general developmental needs.

The aim is to have a free flowing conversation about the child that is informative for all and especially the parents. It is also an aim to set parents and carers at ease to allow a full and frank sharing of information. Parents are welcome to bring other family members or friends or supporters to the meeting.

When a pupil or their family have English as an additional language, the school will ensure that interpreters are available to the child and family at the review meeting itself. If the parents request it, the school will arrange for any relevant documents to be translated into the family’s preferred language.

The next review will usually be within twelve months. However, if parents or professionals feel that there is a need for an earlier (interim) review of the educational provision for the pupil this can be arranged at any time within the twelve months.
