Prevention of Bullying

Bullying is deliberately hurtful behaviour which is repeated often over a period of time and which is directed at children who find it difficult to defend themselves. Fortunately, bullying is an extremely rare occurrence at St. Luke’s Primary School.

It helps that pupils are always under the supervision of trained staff – teachers and/or teaching assistants. Bullying can be detected by careful observation of pupils, not only when incidents are seen but also it is indicated when pupils show nervousness of other pupils.

taff should respond by comforting the victim and making it plain to the bully that what he or she is doing is wrong. The bully should be encouraged to apologise to the victim. Opportunities should be sought in the classroom to reinforce more appropriate behaviour towards others on the part of the bully.

Repeated bullying by an individual means that a written behaviour management plan must be agreed with the pupil’s parents and followed by all staff at all times.

Racist behaviour should be treated in the same way as bullying. Again, we are fortunate that overt racist behaviour is an extremely rare occurrence at this school.
