The St Luke's Curriculum

At St Luke’s our goal is to provide an engaging, inclusive curriculum that is responsive to the needs of our pupils. Through a skills-based curriculum we nurture our pupil’s emotional, social and physical development to maximise their abilities to grow and achieve. At the core of our curriculum, is the development of pupil’s communication and independence skills. We aim to equip our pupils with the skills they need to become resilient and ready for the next stage of their journey. Our curriculum achieves this through offering an exciting and inspiring range of first quality teaching experiences which champion and challenge every pupil to learn and flourish regardless of their starting point.  We provide a broad and balanced curriculum by planning under topic headings to engage children in rich and valuable experiences.

Our children are taught in chronological age class groups. The sessions in the morning have a focus on development on the fundamental skills of English and Maths. All classes in KS1 and KS2 follow a Long Term Plan for English; to ensure the children access and engage in a range of age appropriate texts from a variety of genres. As part of the daily English lesson children are taught pre phonics and phonics skills, as children reach the appropriate level we follow a Systematic Synthetic Phonics scheme. We currently are in the process of implementing the Twinkl Systematic Synthetic Phonics Scheme. Maths sessions follow a LTP which gives children opportunity to develop essential skills of mathematics. The plan allows the children to develop and consolidate skills through repetition and focuses on practical application and providing real life contexts.

The afternoons support the development of PSED, Key Skills and Life Skills which we feel are a priority for all of our children. Activities are planned to meet the needs of the individual child and to focus on their EHCP outcomes.
We value Communication as a key focus throughout the school and all opportunities are used to support and develop these skills daily for all children.

We currently run a specialist class for the children with profound and multiple learning difficulties and the most complex health needs; where the day is focused on meeting the individual communication and cognition needs.

Below you will find links to further information regarding the curriculum.  There are also further pages in this section about English, Maths and how the curriculum is organised.
