Teaching at St Luke's

At St Luke's we organise our curriculum into different pathways and classes are organised according to these pathways.  We have the following class groups:
  • Formal Learners
  • Semi-Formal Learners
  • Pre-Formal Learners: Profound and Multiple Learning Needs
  • Pre-Formal Learners: Sensory Needs
Children Learn in their class groups throughout the day.  Some children may have specific interventions identified, such as hydrotherapy, speech and language therapy, sensory circuits or access to some of our sensory spaces.

Class sizes range from 8 children to 12 children, dependent on needs.  Each class has at least 3 Teaching Assistants, with some classes having more.

We want teachers who are committed to being "Champions for Every Child" and demonstrate this through their practice, by delivering exciting and engaging lessons that meet the needs of the children.

Support for Teachers

We understand that most teachers who start at St Luke's may not have worked in a special school before and therefore we offer a comprehensive induction package. We have a Professional Development lead who will organise all of your training, whilst you are at St Luke's. If you are an ECT then we will provide the full ECT programme.

We have a Teacher's Meeting every Monday Night (4:00 to 4:50pm) and every Tuesday Night we have either Team Time or training for all staff (4:00 to 4:50pm).

Our training includes the following areas:
  • Communication (Speech and Language) Training
  • Trauma Informed Practice
  • Meeting Sensory Needs
  • Understanding Child Development
  • Meeting the needs of the children
  • Level 1 Team Teach
  • Moving and Handling Training
  • Safeguarding Training
