Being a Sensory Mentor at St Luke's |
At St Luke's we want candidates who are committed to being "Champions for Every Child" and want to make a difference to children's lives.
We expect candidates who apply for the Sensory Mentor role to have considerable experience of working with children (usually in another school or nursery setting, either mainstream or special) and have an understanding of Sensory strategies, which may be used to help children to regulate. The Sensory Mentor is a new position to St Luke's. We are looking for candidates who understand Sensory Integration Needs and how these strategies can be used to support children to regulate. The role will involve a range of activities throughout the school day. These will include:
A key part of the Sensory Mentor Role is being part of our Family Support Team. At present that includes the Deputy Headteacher, an Assistant Headteacher (who has responsibility for supporting families) and a Family Support Officer. We are also recruiting for a Sensory Mentor, who will also join this team. As a member of the family support team there will be an expectation that the successful candidate will take on a case load of families and support them through Family Support Meetings, Early Help Meetings, Child in Need Meetings or Child Protection Meetings. |
Support for Sensory Mentor |
We have a Professional Development lead who will organise all of your training, whilst you are at St Luke's. We understand that most people who start at St Luke's may not have worked in a special school before and therefore we offer a comprehensive induction package.
There will be different levels of support for this role. The Assistant Headteacher for Pupils and the Sensory Lead will support with developing understanding of Sensory Needs and understanding school systems to help children to regulate their senses. The Family Support Team will support with understanding the school's approach to supporting families. We also purchase the services of a Sensory Occupational Therapist who will support developing an understanding of Sensory Integration. Training will include the following areas:
