The St Luke's Approach to the  Curriculum

Picture
What is the intent when teaching the curriculum?
At St Luke’s we pride ourselves on being champions for every child, we aim to provide an engaging, inclusive curriculum that is responsive to the needs of our pupils. Through our curriculum we nurture our pupil’s emotional, social and physical development to maximise their abilities to grow and achieve. At the core of our curriculum is the development of pupil’s communication and independence skills. We aim to equip our pupils with the skills they need to become resilient and ready for the next stage of their journey. Our curriculum achieves this through offering an exciting and inspiring range of first quality teaching experiences which champion and challenge every pupil to learn and flourish regardless of their starting point.  We provide a broad and balanced curriculum by planning around topic themes to engage children in rich and valuable experiences.

How is the curriculum implemented?

  • Curriculum learning takes place in class groups for the afternoon sessions. Teachers plan the curriculum under topic headings for each half term.
  • Skills are taught under the headings Creative, Knowledge and Understanding of the World and Physical. PSED/ PSHE skills are a focus throughout the day and individual’s EHCP targets take priority for their learning.
  • Lessons are then taught and assessed under each of the headings so learning and progress can be reported to parents and passed up for transition.

What is the impact and what are the next steps?

Impact:
  • Children have access to a range of activities and develop their skills across a range of area
Next Steps:
  • Upload curriculum assessments to EfL
  • Add assessment data to EfL
  • Moderate activities and use data to evaluate progress and teaching
  • Review and evaluate topics
